Public Transport – Dolmuş (Minibuses) in North Cyprus
Public transport in North Cyprus is mainly provided by Dolmuş minibuses, which operate between towns, main roads, and popular routes. Dolmuş services offer a simple and affordable way to travel locally, particularly between Girne Kyrenia, Alsancak, Lapta, Çatalköy, Esentepe, and Nicosia Lefkoşa.
The public transport system is limited and does not generally serve hillside villages, residential developments, or many tourist and beach locations. Services also do not run through villages in the same way as urban bus networks. For this reason, car hire or private transport is strongly recommended, especially for property viewings, daily living, and exploring North Cyprus comfortably.
Dolmuş routes are privately operated under licence from the North Cyprus authorities. Vehicles are usually white minibuses, with the destination clearly displayed in the front window. Passengers can wait at recognised bus stops or flag down a Dolmuş along the route, and drivers will normally stop when safe to do so.
Dolmuş services do not operate to fixed timetables. As a general guide, services between towns and busier routes run more frequently, while quieter or more rural areas may have longer waiting times. In winter, services typically reduce in the evening, while summer services usually run later but may still finish earlier than expected.
For residents, property owners, and visitors in North Cyprus, public transport is best viewed as a supplementary option, with car ownership or rental offering far greater flexibility and convenience.
